On March 5, 2010 we welcomed Miley into our home!  Miley is a Black Mouth Cur.

The Black Mouth Cur is a, muscular, sturdy, rugged Southern dog. The coat comes in a variety of shades of yellow, fawns and brindle. Some Black Mouth Curs are born with heavier coats and some are born with lighter coats; these two different coat types can appear in the same litter. The muzzle is black, tan or the same color as the coat.  Black muzzles are usually preferred and any other color is considered a fault. The ears are medium-sized and hanging. The tail can be quite lengthy. The chest is deep and solid.

The Black Mouth Cur is an excellent hunter of boar, bear, coon, squirrel and deer.  They can also work with cattle.  Even though the cur can be relentless and overpowering in pursuit of game, it is kind and protective of its family.  Loyalty and fearlessness are the norm.  They have a burning desire to please their master and they are good with children.  Curs need an owner that projects a natural authority over the dog and they must set rules the dog must follow.  It is essential that a cur receive daily mental and physical excercise.  Curs that lack in exercise can become high strung.

The short hair of the Black Mouth Cur is easy to groom. Occasionally comb and brush to remove dead and loose hairs. Bathe only when necessary as bathing can dry out the skin causing skin problems. Keep the ear canal free of excess hair and the toenails clipped.

The southern United States is well populated with cur-type dogs that are used by local hunters and sportsman.  It was a Black Mouth Cur who played the role of Old Yeller, in the famous Disney movie Old Yeller.

This breed is recognized by many dog associations, including the American Canine Registry.  However, they are not currently recognized by the American Kennel Association and are therefore not included as a part of the annual Westminster Kennel Club competition.

We adopted Miley because she was not able to adjust to the rigors of hunting boar that her previous owner required.  She is very gentle and is getting along great with Honey and Spice.  She was once house-broken but she needs to re-learn this process because she has been an outside dog for about a year now.  As the breed suggests, she is very loveable and loyal and she is a welcome addition to our home.
